It is made up of the mineral- Calcium Magnesium Silicate with a generic formula CaMgSi2 O6. It has a Hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, which means it is not too tough or strong and therefore some care should be taken in its handling. The stone’s ‘Cabochon’ cuts are typically biconvex and the bottoms are left rough and unpolished. It has a specific gravity (density) ranging from 3.22 to 3.38 It has a refractive index of 1.664 to 1.730. It belongs to the ‘Monoclinic crystal’ system and is known to form as columnar crystals. The stone exhibits quite a strong Magnetic force due to its magnetite content and paramagnetic properties.
